What Citronella Actually Buys You
Nearly every DIY mosquito product works on the mosquito that is already biting you. Foggers, torches, candles, the clip-on repellents: they push adults out of one small area for a short while, and then the same population drifts back in from the ivy along the fence.
Professional mosquito control aims somewhere else entirely. Mosquitoes only fly and bite for a few hours around dawn and dusk. The rest of the day they are resting somewhere cool and damp: under the deck, inside the laurel hedge, in the north-facing side yard that never quite dries out. Treating those resting places is what actually brings the numbers down, and it is the part a hardware-store product is not designed to do.
The other half is water. Every mosquito in your yard started as a larva in standing water, usually not far from where it is biting you. We look for it, and we tell you exactly where it is.

OUR PROCESS
A Four-Step Plan, Built Around Your Yard
No two Portland-area yards run mosquitoes the same way. A shaded Lake Oswego lot with mature firs and a water feature behaves nothing like an open new-build in Hillsboro. The process adapts to what the inspection finds.

Inspection
We walk the exterior and map two things: where adults are resting, and every place water is standing. Gutters, tarps, plant saucers, low spots, yard drains, the birdbath nobody refreshes.

Resting-Site Treatment
Targeted treatment of the shaded harborage where mosquitoes wait out the day: hedge interiors, fence lines, under decks and porches, dense ground cover.

The Water Side
The breeding half of the problem. Sources that can be treated are treated; the rest we document for you, because a bucket you tip out does more than anything we can spray on it.

KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DEALING WITH
Mosquitoes in the Willamette Valley
We do not get the mosquito seasons Texas and Florida get, and anyone who has lived in both places will happily tell you so. What we get is a long wet spring that leaves water sitting absolutely everywhere, followed by a warm stretch that turns all of it into a nursery.
The Willamette Valley holds its humidity, and Portland-metro yards are shaded, fenced, and densely planted. Cool, still and damp is exactly what an adult mosquito is looking for at midday. That is why the mosquito problem in Beaverton is usually a side-yard problem, and why a Tualatin backyard with a pond runs mosquitoes weeks after the neighbors have stopped noticing them.
Two facts do most of the explaining. First, mosquitoes need standing water to breed, not a pond, just water that sits. A saucer under a pot is plenty. Second, in warm weather the trip from egg to biting adult takes somewhere around a week to ten days, which is why a puddle you ignored on the first of the month is a problem by the middle of it.

A Calm Word About Mosquito-Borne Illness
We are not going to sell you a mosquito plan with a public-health scare, and you should be a little suspicious of anyone who tries. For the overwhelming majority of Portland-area families this is a comfort problem: you want your evenings in the yard back, and you would like to stop scratching your ankles.
Mosquito-borne illness does exist in Oregon, and the Oregon Health Authority publishes the current picture if you want to read it. That is the honest framing, and it is where we leave it.

The Five Minutes That Make Our Work Last
This is the part we genuinely cannot do for you, and it matters more than most homeowners expect. A mosquito can run its whole life cycle in a container the size of a saucer. Walk the yard once a week and tip out anything holding water. Here is the Portland-specific list.

Plant Saucers and Pot Trays
The classic, and the one almost everyone misses. Under every pot on the deck and along the side of the house.

Gutters and Downspout Extensions
Ours fill with fir needles and big-leaf maple litter, then hold water in the flat runs long after the rain stops. Clear them in June, not October.

Tarps, Covers and the Woodpile
The blue tarp over the firewood, the cover on the boat, the patio furniture cover. Every fold and sag holds its own small puddle.

Birdbaths and Water Features
Refresh a birdbath weekly. A pond with moving water and fish is usually fine on its own; a still ornamental basin is a nursery.

Bees, and Why Where We Treat Matters
This comes up on almost every mosquito estimate we write, and it should. Prime exists to protect homes, health and the environment through sustainable pest control, and a Portland yard full of blooming rhododendron, lavender and salal is not a place to be careless with a sprayer.
Here is the honest version rather than the marketing one. Mosquito treatments are not selective; they do not read the label and skip the bees. What makes an application safer for pollinators is judgment, not a product claim: putting treatment on the shaded undersides of vegetation where mosquitoes rest rather than on the blossoms where bees forage, working at times of day when pollinators are not out, and leaving flowering plants alone.
If you keep bees, garden seriously, or have a certified pollinator habitat in the yard, say so at the inspection. We would far rather adjust the plan up front than have that conversation afterwards.
