About Ants
Learn about the ants common to Oregon, their behavior, habitats, and why they invade homes.
Understanding these pests is the first step to keeping them out.
What Are Ants?
Ants are social insects belonging to the family Formicidae. With over 12,000 known species worldwide, they have adapted to nearly every environment on Earth. In Oregon, several species thrive in our temperate climate, making them one of the most persistent pests homeowners face.
These remarkable insects live in organized colonies that can range from a few dozen individuals to millions. Their success comes from their highly cooperative social structure, with each ant playing a specific role in the colony’s survival.
How an Ant Colony Functions
An ant colony operates with a level of efficiency that many factories model their protocols after. Different types of ants exist within a colony, each born to perform a specific task. Ants do everything for the survival of the colony, not the individual.

The Queen
The queen is the primary individual responsible for laying eggs and furthering the colonyu2019s growth. Some colonies have multiple queens, allowing them to expand rapidly and establish satellite nests.

Worker Ants
Workers have split responsibilities. Older workers defend the colony and gather food, while younger workers maintain the nest and care for the queen and developing larvae.

Colony Intelligence
Workers decide on tasks based on environmental needs and interactions with others. Remarkably, ant colonies possess the ability to process and overcome complex problems collectively.
Ant Habitats
Ants are highly versatile creatures able to live almost anywhere that provides shelter and food sources. They commonly nest outdoors but readily make themselves at home inside residential structures.
Once an ant colony establishes itself inside a home, they will nest in wall voids or crawlspaces, making for an ongoing battle. The colony will keep appearing in different areas of the house as scouts search for food and water.
Common Outdoor Nesting Sites
Outside the home, ants will be almost anywhere in the yard. Youu2019ll likely find them nesting around gardens or at the base of trees. Ants can slowly damage a garden by feeding on vegetables and fruits over time. They may have a colony in a neighboru2019s yard but follow fence lines to reach food sources on your property.
Where Ants Appear Indoors
Ants are so small they can squeeze through even the tiniest openings around your home. Some of the most frequent places pest professionals find ants include:
- Under sinks and near water sources
- Along baseboards and window frames
- Kitchen counters and pantries
- Open food containers and pet food bowls
- Garages and utility areas
- Under doors and around settling chimneys
- Garbage cans and food storage areas
The most common locations are kitchens and food storage areas. Once inside, ants help themselves to even the smallest openings in boxes or containers. Learn more about sudden ant infestations.
Common Ant Species in Oregon
Oregon is home to several ant species that frequently invade homes and businesses. Understanding the differences between them helps identify the best approach for management.
Carpenter Ants
Carpenter ants are the largest ant species found in Oregon, ranging from 6 to 13 millimeters in length. They are typically black but can also appear reddish or yellowish.
Unlike termites, carpenter ants do not eat wood. Instead, they excavate it to create smooth tunnels and galleries for their nests. This behavior can cause significant structural damage to homes over time, particularly in areas with moisture problems.
Signs of carpenter ant activity include small piles of sawdust-like material (frass) near wooden structures, rustling sounds within walls, and sighting winged ants emerging in spring.
Odorous House Ants
Odorous house ants are tiny brown ants ranging from one-sixteenth to one-eighth of an inch long. They get their name from the rotten coconut-like smell they emit when crushed.
These ants are found throughout the continental United States, meaning homeowners across the country deal with this pest daily. Their colonies can be relatively large, sometimes housing thousands of ants and several queens.
Habits and Habitat
Odorous house ants are fond of sweet foods, especially honeydew from aphids. They will nest almost anywhere, making it difficult for homeowners to keep them out. They relocate their nests approximately every three months, even without environmental pressure.
Indoors, they typically nest near moisture sources: wall voids near water pipes, spaces within heaters, beneath leaky fixtures, and inside damaged wood. Outdoors, they prefer exposed soil and areas beneath firewood stacks.
Pavement Ants
Pavement ants measure approximately 2.5 to 3 millimeters and vary from light to dark brown. They are commonly found nesting in cracks in pavement, under sidewalks, and alongside building foundations.
These ants create small mounds of displaced soil at the entrances to their nests, often visible between patio stones or along driveways. While they prefer outdoor nesting, pavement ants readily enter homes in search of food.
They are attracted to a wide variety of foods including sweets, grease, and protein sources. Pavement ants are known for their aggressive behavior toward other ant colonies, and large-scale battles between neighboring colonies are common in spring and summer.
Why Ants Enter Your Home
Understanding what attracts ants helps prevent infestations before they start.
Food Sources
Crumbs, spills, pet food, and improperly stored pantry items attract foraging ants.
Moisture
Leaky pipes, condensation, and damp areas provide water sources ants need to survive.
Shelter
Wall voids, insulation, and structural gaps offer protected nesting sites.
Entry Points
Cracks, gaps around utilities, and openings around doors and windows provide access.
